Emergency Roof Repair in Austin, TX
An emergency roof call in Austin almost always means one of two things: a storm has opened the roof, or a leak that was ignored has finally come through a ceiling. The first hour matters, and most of the useful work in it happens inside the house rather than on the roof.
Everything below comes from public records — the City of Austin’s building permit file and the Texas business register — rather than from estimates or industry averages.

What to do first
- Move what matters out from under the leak and get a bucket down.
- If the ceiling is bulging, pierce it deliberately at the lowest point, over the bucket. A controlled hole beats a collapsed ceiling — a bulge means water is already pooling above the plasterboard.
- Kill the power to that part of the house if water is anywhere near a light fitting or a socket.
- Photograph everything, including the standing water, before you clean up. Insurers ask, and afterwards you cannot recreate it.
- Do not go on the roof. A wet Austin roof in a storm, in the dark, is how people are killed doing this. It can wait for daylight and for somebody insured.
Checking somebody at two in the morning
You have less time and less leverage than usual, and that is exactly the situation a bad operator wants. Two questions still work at that hour:
Are you insured, and can you send me the certificate now? A legitimate emergency contractor has it on their phone. If somebody uninsured falls off your roof, the exposure lands on your homeowner’s policy.
How long have you been trading? Texas keeps a public register with the exact date every business first reported sales. It does not round, and a company formed after last week’s storm cannot talk its way around it.
What a proper emergency tarp is
Not a sheet with bricks on it. A correct tarp runs from above the damage over the ridge, so water cannot get under the upslope edge, and it is fastened to battens screwed through into sound decking. That means deliberate new holes in the roof, which is fine — they get sealed during the real repair.
It buys weeks, not months. Texas sun destroys polyethylene, and anything left up past a couple of months starts shedding plastic into the gutters.
Ask about the credit
Emergency work is billed as a call-out plus materials. Many contractors will credit it against the permanent repair if you use them for both — but only if you ask before they start, and only if it is written down.
Afterwards
When the emergency is over, the useful question is why it happened. Austin’s permit record swings from 463 roof jobs in a quiet year to 905 in a heavy one, and the heavy years follow hail. If a storm did this to your roof, it very likely did something to your neighbours’ too, and there is a filing window on the insurance.
The thing nobody tells you about Texas
There is no state roofing licence in Texas. No trade examination, no bonding requirement, no state registration specific to roofing. When a website says “licensed and insured”, the second word is doing all of the work.
So “licensed” is not a filter you can use here. Three things are: a current certificate of insurance with dates you can read, the date the business actually started trading (a public state filing, exact to the day), and a written scope that names materials, squares, what happens to the decking, the flashing, the permit and the warranty split. A quote that is one line and one number is not a quote.
And one to walk away from: a contractor offering to “waive your deductible” or fold it into the price is describing insurance fraud, and in Texas the homeowner is a party to it.
