Gutter and Fascia Repair in Austin, TX

481 Austin permits mention gutters, fascia or soffit. Most gutter work needs no permit at all, so the real volume is far higher — what the record captures is the jobs big enough to involve the roof edge itself.

Everything below comes out of the City of Austin’s own building permit file and the Texas business register. Both are public records, and neither is what the advertising is based on.

Austin live oaks shed in spring, not autumn

This is the single most useful thing on this page, and almost nobody says it. Live oak is the most common tree in Austin — the city’s own inventory counts nearly ten thousand of them — and it is semi-evergreen. It drops its old leaves and its catkins in March and April, as the new growth pushes them off.

So the standard advice, imported from places with real autumns, has you cleaning gutters in November. In Austin that is six months late. The gutters clog in spring and then sit blocked through the wettest part of the year.

What a blocked gutter does to a roof

Water that cannot get away backs up under the bottom course of shingles. From there it reaches the decking and the fascia board behind the gutter, and fascia is usually softwood. Rot there is slow, invisible from the ground, and expensive: replacing fascia means taking the gutter down, cutting out the timber, and refitting — several times the cost of the cleaning that would have prevented it.

The other consequence is at ground level. Overflow at the eaves dumps water against the foundation, and Austin’s clay soils move dramatically with moisture. Foundation movement is the most expensive problem a house here can have, and a blocked gutter is one of its cheapest causes.

Gutter guards, honestly

They work against leaves and they do not work against everything. Live oak catkins are stringy and mat on top of mesh; Ashe juniper needles are fine enough to pass straight through most of it. A guard reduces cleaning frequency in Austin; it does not eliminate it, and any salesperson who says otherwise has not looked at what falls here.

Signs worth acting on

  • Grit collecting in the gutter — that is your shingles, not dirt.
  • Water sheeting over the front edge during rain rather than running to the downspout.
  • A gutter pulling away from the fascia, which usually means the timber behind it has already softened.
  • Staining or peeling paint on the fascia board.
  • Plants growing in the gutter, which means it has held soil and water long enough to make a seedbed.

Gutters & fascia permits, year by year

The busiest year was 2024, with 48. Peaks in a single category are worth reading: a spike in replacement work follows hail, while a spike in repair work usually follows a run of dry, hot summers that finish off roofs already near the end.

Where gutters & fascia gets done

These five ZIP codes account for the largest share. That is partly housing density and partly the age of the stock — and where one category clusters, the contractors nearby have usually tuned themselves to it.

What this costs in Austin

Austin’s permit file holds 600 residential jobs that are roof work and nothing else — not remodels that happened to touch the roof — each with a declared value. That is the only honest basis for a price on this page. Here is how they fall:

  • under $10,000 — 256 permits (43%)
  • $10,000–$20,000 — 116 permits (19%)
  • $20,000–$30,000 — 102 permits (17%)
  • $30,000–$50,000 — 49 permits (8%)
  • over $50,000 — 77 permits (13%)

Six in ten come in under $20,000. The average across all 600 is $27,916, higher than the middle of the range because the big jobs pull it up — which is exactly why a single average is a bad way to budget.

A declared value is what somebody wrote on the application before the old roof came off. It tells you the league a job is in; it does not tell you what the final invoice said. It is still better evidence than a national average with the word “Austin” dropped into it.

Before you call anybody

Texas issues no state roofing licence — no trade exam, no state registration specific to roofing. So “licensed and insured” is doing all of its work in the second word. Ask for a current certificate of insurance with dates you can read, ask how long the business has actually been trading, and get the scope in writing before anyone starts.

One practical tip for this job in particular: Book the clean for late April, after the live oaks have finished. One correctly timed visit here beats two badly timed ones.
