Metal vs Shingle Roof Cost in Austin, TX
Among Austin’s roof-only residential permits with a declared value, the 16 that mention metal average $26,823, and the 45 that mention shingle average $13,487.
Everything below comes from public records — the City of Austin’s building permit file and the Texas business register — rather than from estimates or industry averages.

What those numbers can and cannot tell you
Those are small samples and they describe different houses rather than the same house priced twice, so treat them as a direction rather than a ratio. The direction matches what the trade quotes: metal costs roughly two to three times asphalt to install.
For scale, the full set of 600 roof-only residential filings averages $27,916 and falls like this:
- under $10,000 — 256 permits (43%)
- $10,000–$20,000 — 116 permits (19%)
- $20,000–$30,000 — 102 permits (17%)
- $30,000–$50,000 — 49 permits (8%)
- over $50,000 — 77 permits (13%)
The thirty-year arithmetic
Metal lasts roughly two to three times as long as asphalt — the same ratio as the price. So on a house you intend to keep for thirty years, the two options land in broadly the same place, and the decision comes down to preference and to the two factors below. On a house you intend to sell in five years, metal is simply more expensive, and no amount of enthusiasm changes the sum.
Where metal genuinely wins in Central Texas
- Hail. Asphalt that takes a serious hit is finished, even if it does not leak for two more years, because the granules are gone and the mat is fractured. Metal dents. Some Texas insurers price that difference in — worth a call to your agent before deciding, because a premium reduction changes the arithmetic.
- Heat. A light-coloured metal roof reflects a large share of the solar load that asphalt absorbs and passes into the attic. In an Austin summer that is real money, though how much depends entirely on the attic insulation and ventilation underneath it.
Where asphalt wins
- Up-front cost, which for most people is the whole argument.
- Availability of crews. Every roofer in Austin can lay shingle; standing seam is a fabrication skill and not every company has it.
- Repairs. A damaged shingle is replaced in minutes. A damaged metal panel is often a whole-run job.
- Matching. Shingle is easier to blend after a partial repair, though colours do get discontinued.
If you go metal, ask three things
Gauge, coating, and exposed or concealed fastener. Those three answers separate a metal roof that lasts forty years from one that starts leaking at fifteen — exposed-fastener systems rely on neoprene washers that perish in Texas sun, and standing seam costs more precisely because it hides them.
One caveat that applies to every figure here: a declared permit value is what the owner or contractor wrote on the application before the old roof came off, not what the final invoice said. It is a reliable guide to scale and an unreliable guide to the cent — and still far better evidence than a national average with the word “Austin” dropped into it.
The thing nobody tells you about Texas
There is no state roofing licence in Texas. No trade examination, no bonding requirement, no state registration specific to roofing. When a website says “licensed and insured”, the second word is doing all of the work.
So “licensed” is not a filter you can use here. Three things are: a current certificate of insurance with dates you can read, the date the business actually started trading (a public state filing, exact to the day), and a written scope that names materials, squares, what happens to the decking, the flashing, the permit and the warranty split. A quote that is one line and one number is not a quote.
And one to walk away from: a contractor offering to “waive your deductible” or fold it into the price is describing insurance fraud, and in Texas the homeowner is a party to it.
