Asphalt Shingle Roofs in Austin
Asphalt shingle is the cheapest roof you can put on an Austin house, and the permits say so plainly. Across 600 residential roof-only permits filed with the City of Austin, the 45 that name asphalt shingle average $13,487. The 16 that name metal average $26,823 — roughly 2.0 times as much for the same job.
The “average roof cost in Austin” number is misleading, and here is why
Search for what a roof costs in this city and you will be told somewhere around $27,916. That figure is real — it is the mean across all 600 roof-only permits — and it is close to useless, because 256 of those 600 permits, 43% of them, are under $10,000.
A handful of very large jobs drags the mean upward. 77 permits are over $50,000, and those alone pull the average well past what a normal house pays. If you have a single-storey home with asphalt shingle, the $13,487 figure describes your situation far better than the headline number does.
| What the permit was valued at | Permits | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Under $10,000 | 256 | 43% |
| $10,000 – $20,000 | 116 | 19% |
| $20,000 – $30,000 | 102 | 17% |
| $30,000 – $50,000 | 49 | 8% |
| Over $50,000 | 77 | 13% |
Asphalt shingle against the alternatives, in Austin permits
Of the 68 permits that name a material outright, asphalt shingle accounts for 66%. It is not close.
| Material | Roof-only permits | Average job | Against asphalt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asphalt shingle | 45 | $13,487 | — |
| Clay or concrete tile | 7 | $22,757 | 1.7× more |
| Metal | 16 | $26,823 | 2.0× more |
Read the permit counts before the averages. 7 tile permits is not a statistic, it is an anecdote, and we publish the count next to every figure precisely so you can tell the difference. The asphalt number rests on 45 filings, which is the sturdiest of the three and still not enormous.

Why this city is covered in asphalt
Two reasons, and neither is about looks. The first is hail: Austin sits in a belt that gets hit hard enough, often enough, that a roof here is a consumable. Putting $26,823 on a house that may need the roof replaced again after the next storm is a harder decision than putting $13,487.
The second is that insurance pays out on replacement cost. When a hailstorm totals a shingle roof, the cheque covers a shingle roof. Upgrading to metal means paying the difference yourself, and on these numbers that difference is around $13,336.
What to ask before you sign
- Which shingle, exactly. “Architectural” and “three-tab” are different products at different prices with different lifespans. The quote should name the manufacturer and the line.
- Is it Class 4 impact-rated? In a hail city this matters twice: it survives more, and several Texas insurers discount the premium for it. Ask what the discount would be before you decide it is not worth the upgrade.
- Decking included or extra? Rotten plywood underneath is the single most common way a fixed price becomes a variable one. Ask what the per-sheet charge is before the tear-off, not after.
- Who hauls the old roof away, and is the disposal in the price.
And the one that costs people the most: nobody can pay your deductible. If a salesman offers to absorb it, that is insurance fraud in Texas and the homeowner is a party to it, not a bystander.
Where these numbers come from
City of Austin building permits, dataset quv8-5ckq on data.austintexas.gov, a public record. We filtered to residential permits whose work description is a re-roof, roof replacement or roof repair and nothing else — 600 of them — because a permit for a whole remodel that happens to mention the roof tells you nothing about what a roof costs. The material breakdown comes from the work description of those same permits.
Permit valuations are what the contractor declared to the city. They are not quotes and they are not what you will be charged. They are, however, filed under penalty and they are the closest public thing to what this work actually costs in this city — which is more than can be said for a national average.
