The Oldest Roofing Contractors in Austin

Google rounds a contractor down to “20+ years in business”. The State of Texas does not round. Every business that reports sales here has a first-sales date on file, exact to the day, and it is public — so here are the longest-established roofing and exterior contractors in the Austin metro, in order.

Everything below comes from public records — the City of Austin’s building permit file and the Texas business register — rather than from estimates or industry averages.

What longevity does and does not prove

It does not prove good workmanship. Plenty of long-lived businesses are mediocre and plenty of new ones are excellent. What it proves is survival — through the 2011 drought, through multiple hail seasons, through a construction downturn — and a business that has been paying its bills for two decades is a different risk from one registered last month.

It matters most for warranties. A twenty-five year workmanship warranty is worth exactly as much as the company standing behind it, which is why the storm-chaser problem is a warranty problem rather than a quality problem.

How to check any contractor yourself

The dataset is the Texas Comptroller’s Active Sales Tax Permit Holders file. It is free, it is public, and it lists every business with an active sales tax permit in the state along with the date it first reported sales. Search the company name and compare what comes back with what the website claims.

The listing is a record, not a recommendation

Appearing here means the state has an active sales tax permit for that business under a roofing, sheet metal or exterior classification. Nothing more. Texas issues no state roofing licence, so there is no qualification behind any of these names — which is exactly why the date, the insurance certificate and the written scope are the three things worth checking.

If you own one of these businesses and want the entry corrected or removed, say so and it will be done. No reason required.

Sources: City of Austin issued building permits; Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, active sales tax permit holders. Both public records, retrieved September 2026.

How this was put together, and what it cannot tell you

Two public files, joined locally. The City of Austin publishes every building permit it issues, with an address, coordinates, a date, a work description typed by whoever filed it, and a declared value. The Texas Comptroller publishes every business holding an active sales tax permit, with the date it first reported sales in the state. Neither office joins them to anything; that is the work.

Four limits worth stating plainly, because most sites quoting permit data do not:

  • The record starts in 2006. Anything older is not in it, so nothing here describes how Austin roofs behaved before then.
  • Small repairs never appear. A permit is required for replacement and structural work, not for patching. The counts are therefore a floor, not a total — and for work like tarping or inspection, which needs no permit at all, there is essentially nothing to count.
  • The work description is free text. Somebody typed it. Searching for a category means searching for several spellings of it and accepting that a permit reading only “new roof” lands in no category at all.
  • A declared value is not an invoice. It is written before the old roof comes off, which is exactly when nobody yet knows what the decking underneath looks like.

Where a sample is too small to average honestly, this site says so rather than publishing a number with a confident face on it. Every figure here can be reproduced from the same two files by anybody who wants to check.
