Same-Day Roof Repair in Austin, TX
Same-day is a realistic request for some roof work and an unrealistic one for the rest, and the difference is worth knowing before you start ringing round — because a contractor who promises a same-day full replacement is telling you something about themselves.
Everything below comes from public records — the City of Austin’s building permit file and the Texas business register — rather than from estimates or industry averages.

What can genuinely happen today
- An inspection. Almost always, and usually free.
- Emergency tarping. Yes, and it should be.
- A small, localised repair — a few shingles, a flashing detail — if the crew has the material on the van and the weather allows.
What cannot
- A full replacement. Material has to be ordered and delivered, and a permit has to be pulled. Anybody promising this today is skipping one of those.
- Anything requiring a colour match to an existing roof.
- Structural repair, which needs the extent established before the price is.
- Anything at all in a thunderstorm. Nobody competent works a wet roof, and the ones who do are the ones you should not have hired.
Whether today is possible depends on the weather three weeks ago
This is the part people do not expect. Austin’s roof workload swings enormously — 463 permits in 2022 against 905 in 2024. In the fortnight after a significant hailstorm every crew in Travis County is committed, and the companies with immediate availability are frequently the ones who drove into town after the storm.
In a quiet stretch the same request is easy and cheaper. If your roof is not actively letting water in, waiting a few weeks past a storm wave is one of the better financial decisions available to you.
How to make same-day more likely
- Call early. Crews are dispatched in the morning.
- Send photographs with the first message — from the ground, all four sides, plus the interior damage.
- Say clearly whether water is coming in now. It changes your position in the queue, legitimately.
- Be flexible about a tarp today and the repair later. That is usually the right answer anyway.
One thing not to skip for speed
The insurance certificate. Rushing is exactly when it gets waved through, and it is the one document that protects you if somebody is injured on your property. Ask for it before they go up, even when you are in a hurry.
The thing nobody tells you about Texas
There is no state roofing licence in Texas. No trade examination, no bonding requirement, no state registration specific to roofing. When a website says “licensed and insured”, the second word is doing all of the work.
So “licensed” is not a filter you can use here. Three things are: a current certificate of insurance with dates you can read, the date the business actually started trading (a public state filing, exact to the day), and a written scope that names materials, squares, what happens to the decking, the flashing, the permit and the warranty split. A quote that is one line and one number is not a quote.
And one to walk away from: a contractor offering to “waive your deductible” or fold it into the price is describing insurance fraud, and in Texas the homeowner is a party to it.
The ten lines a written quote should contain
Most of the difference between two roof quotes in Austin is not the shingle. It is what surrounds it, and what quietly went missing from the cheaper one:
- The material, named by manufacturer and product line — not just “architectural shingle”.
- The number of squares. Without it, two quotes cannot be compared at all.
- Tear-off or overlay, and how many existing layers come off.
- Decking replacement, priced per sheet. The single clause that most often turns a fixed quote into a variable one.
- Underlayment, and what specifically goes into the valleys.
- New flashing at every chimney, wall and vent — replaced, not reused.
- Ventilation: what is kept, replaced or added.
- Who pulls the permit, and whether the fee is inside the price.
- Cleanup, including a magnet sweep for nails.
- The warranty, split explicitly into labour and material.
A quote that is one line and one number is not a quote. It is an opening position, and you have no way of telling what was left out of it.
