Soffit and Fascia Repair in Austin, TX
204 Austin permits mention soffit or fascia work. It is the least glamorous part of a roof and one of the most consequential, because it is where the roof meets the weather at its most vulnerable angle — and it is usually made of wood.
Everything below comes out of the City of Austin’s own building permit file and the Texas business register. Both are public records, and neither is what the advertising is based on.

What they are, and what they do
The fascia is the vertical board that runs along the ends of the rafters at the eaves; it is what the gutter is fixed to. The soffit is the horizontal underside between the fascia and the wall, and in most houses it carries the intake vents for the attic.
So rot here is not cosmetic. Fascia failure drops your gutters. Soffit failure blocks or opens the attic intake, and open soffits are how squirrels, rats and wasps get into a roof space.
It is almost always the gutter
Fascia rot in Austin is a symptom with one dominant cause: water backing up out of a blocked gutter and running down behind it, against the board, for months. The fascia is behind the gutter and out of sight, so it is soft long before anybody notices.
Which loops back to the live oaks. Austin’s dominant tree sheds in spring, gutters clog in March and April, and they then hold water against the fascia through the wettest months of the year. Clean at the wrong time of year for a few seasons and this is the bill that arrives.
The sequence that costs money
- Gutter blocks in spring and holds standing water.
- Water wicks into the back of the fascia board. Nobody can see it.
- Rot spreads to the rafter tails behind it — now it is structural rather than trim.
- Gutter fixings lose their grip; the gutter starts to sag and overflows worse.
- Soffit goes soft, opens, and something moves into the attic.
Caught at step two it is a board. Caught at step three it is carpentry with the gutter removed and the roof edge lifted, which is several times the price.
Wood, aluminium or PVC
Replacement fascia in Austin is usually wood clad in aluminium, or solid PVC. Cladding wood is cheaper and hides the timber, which is a mixed blessing: it also hides the next round of rot until the metal stains. PVC does not rot at all and costs more. On a house you are keeping, PVC on the north and west elevations — where the weather lands — is money well spent.
Soffit & fascia rot permits, year by year
The busiest year was 2016, with 38. Peaks in a single category are worth reading: a spike in replacement work follows hail, while a spike in repair work usually follows a run of dry, hot summers that finish off roofs already near the end.

Where soffit & fascia rot gets done
These five ZIP codes account for the largest share. That is partly housing density and partly the age of the stock — and where one category clusters, the contractors nearby have usually tuned themselves to it.

What this costs in Austin
Austin’s permit file holds 600 residential jobs that are roof work and nothing else — not remodels that happened to touch the roof — each with a declared value. That is the only honest basis for a price on this page. Here is how they fall:
- under $10,000 — 256 permits (43%)
- $10,000–$20,000 — 116 permits (19%)
- $20,000–$30,000 — 102 permits (17%)
- $30,000–$50,000 — 49 permits (8%)
- over $50,000 — 77 permits (13%)
Six in ten come in under $20,000. The average across all 600 is $27,916, higher than the middle of the range because the big jobs pull it up — which is exactly why a single average is a bad way to budget.
A declared value is what somebody wrote on the application before the old roof came off. It tells you the league a job is in; it does not tell you what the final invoice said. It is still better evidence than a national average with the word “Austin” dropped into it.
Before you call anybody
Texas issues no state roofing licence — no trade exam, no state registration specific to roofing. So “licensed and insured” is doing all of its work in the second word. Ask for a current certificate of insurance with dates you can read, ask how long the business has actually been trading, and get the scope in writing before anyone starts.
One practical tip for this job in particular: Push a screwdriver gently into the fascia behind the gutter at each downspout. If it goes in, you have found the problem before it found your rafters.
