The years-in-business number is not what you think

On a Google business profile, “75+ years in business” is typed by the business. Nobody checks it. The Texas Comptroller, separately, records the date each business first reported sales to the state — a filing, with a day on it.

Nine of the companies below appear in both files under a name close enough to match with confidence. For 5 of those nine, the two dates are more than a decade apart:

This is not an accusation. A roofing business that has traded since the 1970s may have re-incorporated in 2020, and the new entity would carry a 2020 date while the trade, the crews and the family behind it are genuinely older. Both numbers can be true at once.

But only one of them is checkable, and that is the whole point of reading this page instead of a review site. When a salesman on your porch says the company has been doing this for fifty years, you now know which file to look in.

The one that does hold up

J-Conn Roofing & Repair Service, Inc first reported sales to the State of Texas on January 1, 1988 — 38 years ago, and by some margin the oldest verified start date among the companies on this page. Its Google profile claims 45+ years, which for once is the same order of magnitude as the filing.

What the ratings look like taken together

Across all 99 companies there are 19,086 Google reviews, and the review-weighted average is 4.94 out of 5. That is high enough to be almost useless as a filter: 50 of the 99 sit at a flat 5.0, and 14 of those reached it on fewer than 60 reviews.

Roofing is a trade where a perfect score is easy to hold and hard to trust. The work is invisible from the ground, the customer cannot inspect what was done under the shingles, and the failure shows up years later — often after the company has changed its name. Read the count before the score.

What a “Top 10 Best Roofers” page is actually showing you

Search Yelp for roofers in Austin and the page is headed Top 10 Best Roofers Near Austin, Texas. Underneath that heading, before you reach anything ranked on merit, there are 32 cards whose link runs through /adredir?ad_business_id=…&campaign_id=… — Yelp’s advertising redirect. 22 separate companies bought a placement on that one page. The unpaid list underneath it holds 10.

Yelp is not hiding this. Every block is labelled “Sponsored”, which is the law and they follow it. The number is still worth knowing, because a heading that promises the ten best and then leads with 32 purchases is answering a different question than the one you asked.

Of the 10 companies that did rank on merit, 5 had also bought ads on the same page: Caden Roofing, Austin Roofing Company & Water Damage, Ace Roofing, Acura Roofing, Austin Roofing Repairs. So the page carries 5 roofers who are there purely because Yelp’s own ranking put them there.

Some of them are not in Austin

9 of the 27 businesses on that page are registered somewhere else — Round Rock, Dale, Kyle, Georgetown, Jonestown, and one in Belton, which is about a hundred kilometres up I-35. All 9 of them are paid placements. Every single company in the unpaid list is in Austin.

That is the clearest way to see what the money buys. It does not buy a better roof; it buys the right to appear in a city you do not work in.

The two review sites do not disagree about quality. They disagree about how much they know.

Between them those 7 companies hold 2,001 Google reviews and 685 Yelp reviews. LOA Roofing & Construction alone has 994 on one platform and 35 on the other. Whichever site you read, you are reading a third of the story, and which third depends on where that company asked its customers to post.

It also means a thin sample can carry a lot of weight. On that Yelp page, 6 of the businesses shown have five reviews or fewer — including the company sitting at number 10 of the “Top 10 Best”, which holds a flat 5.0 built on one review.

  • Call three, not one. The spread between roof quotes in Austin is wide enough that a single number tells you nothing about whether it is fair.
  • Ask for the certificate of insurance and read the dates on it. Texas does not license roofing contractors, so “licensed and insured” means only the second word.
  • Ask when the company was formed, then check it against the table above. If the answer and the filing disagree by thirty years, ask why — there may be a good reason, and there may not.
  • Walk away from anyone offering to cover your deductible. In Texas that is insurance fraud and the homeowner is a party to it.

Names, phone numbers, categories, ratings and review counts: public Google Maps business profiles for “Roofers, Austin TX”, collected by hand on 11 September 2026. Ratings move; if one here looks stale, it is.

Start-of-trading dates and registered addresses: the Active Sales Tax Permit Holders file published by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, a public record. A business appears there under its legal name, which is often not its trading name — that is why only nine of the 99 below could be matched with enough confidence to print.
